Revenue and profitability are not the same measure. A booking that arrives via MakeMyTrip at a 20% discount plus 18% commission may contribute less net revenue than a direct booking at full rack rate — and the OTA booking creates parity pressure that constrains your direct channel pricing.
The useful question for each channel is not ‘did it bring bookings?’ but ‘what is the net RevPAR this channel delivers, and at what cost?’ That calculation includes commission, the cost of any rate reduction required to qualify for the channel, and the displacement of direct business.
A diversified channel mix is sensible. A channel mix that is not measured by its contribution to net room revenue is a cost disguised as a strategy.
The goal of distribution strategy is not to be on every channel. It is to be on the right channels, at the right cost of acquisition, with enough direct booking share to maintain rate discipline.
