When inbound travel softens, know which guests you actually rely on

← Back to Perspectives

Inbound international travel to India has softened across several source markets in 2025. For most independent hotels outside metro cities and heritage tourist circuits, inbound guests represent a small fraction of total occupancy. For those properties, the softening is a minor variance, not a strategic problem.

The risk is for properties that have built rate strategies around international guests — peak-season tariffs calibrated to inbound spending power — without a domestic demand strategy to replace that revenue when inbound softens.

The diagnostic question is simple: open your booking history for the last 12 months and count the proportion of international guest-nights by month. If that number is below 10%, your inbound exposure is limited. If it is above 30%, you need a contingency for a sustained soft period.

A hotel that cannot answer this question from its own data is operating blind on one of the most consequential variables in its revenue mix.
